Today I learned that the TI-89 will factor the Mersenne number 271-1, which is equal to 228479*48544121*212885833. Mine probably took a minute or more, not blink-of-an-eye Wolfram|Alpha fast, but nonetheless dazzling in light of the enormity of the number. I would not have thought to try this, but a student made short work of a bonus question this way. I am sure that this functionality is not news to many who will read this, but I felt that if this blog is to be any sort of log of my nerdy amusements, I should probably make a note. Take it with a grain of salt, since I am easily amused, but this is a highlight of my day.
